Tour Description: Halifax is world renowned for its beauty and character. Its streets climb from the world’s second deepest harbor to the Citadel, the star shaped fortress that overlooks the city. Halifax is ideally suited for walking tours. Compact enough to cover on foot, downtown Halifax has much of its history preserved for the traveler to see and experience.

Halifax is the biggest city of Canada’s Maritime Provinces (New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island), but it doesn't feel big at all. It feels like a collection of loosely connected neighborhoods to the extent that you can often forget it is one of the central economic engines of eastern Canada. Established in 1749, the city was named for George Montagu Dunk, second earl of Halifax. The city's natural advantages including the well-protected harbor, its location near major fishing grounds and shipping lanes eventually caused Halifax to overtake its rivals and emerge as an industrial port and military base for the ages. Today it is also the cultural cutting edge of eastern Canada. So long as you're not allergic to beer, good food, ocean breezes, and good music, it is fair to say you'll never be at a loss for something to do during your time here.

On this audio walking tour, you will hear about the Halifax Explosion of 1917 that devastated the city and which was the largest man-made explosion prior to the atomic bomb. You’ll also see buildings and structures that date back to the early days of Halifax such as the Town Clock, St Paul’s Anglican Church, the oldest in Canada and the Nova Scotia Legislature building.

Along the way, the tour points out many of the great restaurants and pubs that can be found in downtown Halifax. They include the Five Fishermen Restaurant, the Press Gang Restaurant and the Old Triangle Pub. Many of the personalities of Halifax also come to life. Hear about George Wright and his connection to the sinking of the Titanic as well as Joseph Howe, an icon of free speech in Canadian history.
