Tour Description: Set between the St. Lawrence River and the downtown skyscrapers, Montreal’s historic city center was once surrounded by walls. As you stroll through the narrow, winding streets of Old Montreal, you are never far from the spot where the city was founded back in 1642. You will be surrounded by intermingled traces of different periods. See the remains of the fortified wall that protected the town in its earliest days. Hear about its construction and other fortifications that were needed as the French and English fought for control of the new colonies. This tour contains none of the annoying advertising or bias found on free downloads.

With its multitude of cafes, bars and restaurants and its vibrant street life, Old Montreal is a favorite spot for visitors and residents alike. Claire-Marie, with her in-depth knowledge of this area will show you many of the important buildings and structures. Hear about how the Admiral Nelson column and the Jean Vauquelin statue face each other as if re-enacting the face-off between the French and English that has defined so much of the history of the beginning of Canada.

No visit to Old Montreal is complete without a visit to Place Jacques-Cartier with its many restaurants that offer al fresco dining with great views of the vibrant street life. The tour also includes a stop at the real "heart" of Montreal, Place d'Armes across from Notre-Dame Basilica. This tour starts on the north side of Notre-Dame St. across from Place Jacques-Cartier.

Stops on This Tour: 1) Introduction and Champ-de-Mars, 2) Vauquelin Statue, 3) Court Houses, 4) Montreal City Hall, 5) Chateau Ramezay, 6) Notre-Dame-de-Bonsecours, 7) Pierre du Calvet House, 8) Bonsecours Market, 9) Rasco Hotel, 10) Place Jaques-Cartier, 11) Place d’Armes, 12) Bank of Montreal, 13) New York Life Building, 14) Aldred Building, 15) Old Sulpician Seminary, 16) Notre-Dame Basilica.
