Tour Description: If you are interested in history and splendid old Victorian houses then James Bay is the neighborhood to explore.  It is the oldest residential neighborhood on the West coast of North America that is north of San Francisco.  It occupies the south side of the Inner Harbor close to downtown.  Built by Victoria’s founding families its homes have been lovingly preserved.  James Bay is just a five-minute walk south of downtown with access along Belleville Street, Government Street, Douglas Street and Dallas Road.  This tour contains none of the annoying advertising or bias found on free downloads.

James Bay’s most famous resident was Emily Carr - artist, author, eccentric and one of Canada’s national treasures. Once, people looked down their noses at Emily’s painting style, but today her work is highly prized. Recently one of her paintings sold for more than $2 million - the fourth-highest price paid in Canadian art history. Nationally acclaimed but never truly appreciated in her hometown during her lifetime, Emily was born, lived, worked and died within one city block on Victoria. This tour will show you a fascinating glimpse of this remarkable woman as you walk through Emily Carr’s neighborhood and listen to stories about Emily’s life here on the West Coast.

This tour’s guide, Danda Humphreys, is passionate about Victoria. In addition to writing a weekly column in the Times Colonist, Vancouver Island’s major newspaper, Danda is a skilled researcher and author who has written and published four award-winning books on the history of Victoria.
