Tour Description: Spread across steep hillsides that overlook the Rio Tejo, Lisbon offers all the delights you’d expect from Portugal’s star attraction, yet with half the fuss of other European capitals. This tour contains none of the annoying advertising found on free downloads. Gothic cathedrals, majestic monasteries and quaint museums are all part of the colorful cityscape. However, the real delights of discovery lie in wandering the narrow lanes of Lisbon’s lovely backstreets. As bright yellow trams wind their way through curvy tree-lined streets, Lisboêtas stroll through the old quarters, much as they have done for centuries.

This audio walking tour starts at the Alfama, the oldest part of Lisbon where The Castle is situated. Your guide to Lisbon will tell you how the Portuguese took the castle from the Moors and turned it into a royal palace for over 400 years. The tour, which will take you about five or six hours, depending on how many breaks you take, will then guide you to one of the best views across the river Tagus before leading you down to the city’s Cathedral Sé. Recent excavations have unearthed some amazing ruins dating back to Roman times and we’ll tell you all about them. You’ll hear about the touching ceremony that is conducted in honour of St Anthony of Padua at the Church of Saint Anthony.

Then it’s off to a completely new area, the Baixa at the Praça do Comercio. The Lisbon earthquake of 1755 completely destroyed most of the city and we’ll tell you about the tragic irony that made it particularly devastating. The guide to Lisbon then moves on to the Chiado starting with the Museu do Chiado. You will hear about the Igreja de Sao Roque or the church of Saint Roch, the patron saint of plague victims. It might seem plain on the outside but inside it’s a riot of colour and decoration. We’ll tell you the extraordinary story of the chapel of St John the Baptist. The Elevador de Santa Justa, which is next on your walking tour of Lisbon is one of the remarkable – and very decorative – ways which Lisboetas have devised to get around their city. This takes us to the Rossio district where you’ll wander around the great square of Praça Dom Pedro IV as we point out one of Lisbon’s most famous cafes where you can enjoy a well earned drink.
